FetOpera fundation

Open fetal surgery, i.e. an operation on the unborn child during pregnancy, is now offered in Switzerland. This highly specialised and innovative technique is mainly used to repair spina bifida, also called myelomeningocele, before birth. This very demanding procedure considerably increases the chances for the fetus to be born with significantly less handicaps. In 2010, we introduced this treatment at the Zurich Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy (jointly run by the University Hospital Zurich and the University Children’s Hospital Zurich).

As of yet, there is no obligation for the Swiss disability insurance nor other health insurances to cover cost for open fetal surgery. Therefore, these expensive surgical procedures need to be funded by a third party. Hence the “FetOpera” fund was established with the purpose of supporting fetal surgery in all aspects, particularly when financial constraints are present.

We are deeply convinced that parents-to-be deserve the chance to provide their yet to be born child with spina bifida with the very best therapeutical option available today!

Thank you very much for your support:
